Guy Laliberté’s Colossal Pyramid Will Not Be Passing in Miami

Guy Laliberté’s Colossal Pyramid Will Not Be Passing in Miami

A massive pyramid designed by the Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberté which was due to debut in Miami Beach this month, has been cancelled. The project, which is an immersive multimedia space known as PYI that also doubled as a nightclub after dark, was meant to open at Island Gardens on the 29th of November, in time for the Art Basel in Miami Beach.

A 50-minute show called Through the Echoes, an exhibition encompassing acrobatics, electronic music, lasers and kinetic stage elements, is likened to travelling through space and time similar to walking in a dream in the project’s website. Nevertheless, despite these promises, the event was a collection of disappointment during its premiere in Montreal this summer, which leads the organizers to retool the production for its Miami iteration. This led to the delaying of plans to go on a tour to New York.

According to a PYI representative, due to the unexpected logistical circumstances and some logistical constrains which were beyond their control, they would not be able to showcase the PYI in Miami in time for the arranged programming of the coming season. The representative went on to say that they are thankful for the enthusiasm that Miami residents as much as they do not yet know when they will be back. The PYI representative added that they are looking forward to their prompt return and that those who had presale tickets will receive a full refund.

Earlier, Laliberté, also a prominent collector of African and contemporary art, was set free without charges or conditions after being held in Tahiti over cannabis cultivation in a private island he bought in 2007 known as Nukutepipi. The possession and cultivation of cannabis, even small amounts meant for personal use, is illegal and severely prosecuted in French Polynesia.
